Bodily Injury
Liability
Each state requires that you have certain types
of coverages with minimum liability limits and
for the state of New York its 25/50/10.
The firs two combined coverage
25/50/10 are referred to as
BODILY INJURY LIABILITY.
In an accident where you are found to be at fault, this
coverage
pays
for medical treatments,
rehabilitation or funeral costs caused
by another driver, the other drivers passengers, passengers in
your vehicle and pedestrians.
Liability will automatically raise itself to
50/100 should injuries result in death when you
are only carrying the mandatory 25/50 coverage.
Coverage (protection) for BODILY INJURY LIABILITY in the State of New York can be as low and
high as:
25/50 ($25,000 / $50,000)
50/100 ($50,000 / $100,000)
100/300 ($100,000 / $300,000)
250/500 ($250,000 / $500,000)
The insurance industry recommends that your
Bodily Injury Liability limits be
$100,000 per person and $300.000 per occurrence.
Bodily Injury Liability provides:
Legal defense should you be sued as a result of
an
automobile
accident.
Protection against any
bodily injury you may cause.
Protection against any property damage you may
cause.
and protection towards the cost of
defending a lawsuit
against you.
By insuring yourself with higher liability coverage, you’re protecting yourself against
significant financial loss if you're not
properly covered by insurance.
For Example:
If you were to cause a serious accident where several
vehicles were
involved and you only carry the
mandatory liability coverage
(25/50/10) the State of NY
enforces, it may not be enough
to cover for the damages.
Therefore, by having a higher bodily injury liability
coverage
(protection) you’re not only protecting yourself
from seriously high bills, but also from any possible lawsuits
- and if you have assets to protect, you should
consider higher limits of
Bodily Injury Liability.
In addition to being provided with bodily injury liability coverage, some companies will also pay
on your behalf, up to $250 dollars (varies with companies)
for the cost of bail bonds required because
of an accident,
including related traffic law violations if the accident results in
bodily injury or property damage.
You can also be granted up to $50 dollars a day (varies
with
companies) for loss earnings (missing
work) should you have to
attend trial or should you become
hospitalized due to injuries as
a result of the accident.
